ANALYSIS – Six Months to UK Midterms: Nigel Farage Delivers Historic Shock to Starmer

Reform UK Surges with Over 612 Seats as Calls Mount for Prime Minister to Resign
The UK local elections of May 8, 2026, have delivered a political earthquake across Britain. Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has suffered a historic rout, losing nearly 500 seats net, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK has recorded a spectacular gain of more than 612 seats. This populist tidal wave, described by Farage himself as a “historic shift in British politics,” has placed the Prime Minister under unprecedented pressure. Several Labour MPs are now demanding that he set a clear timeline for his departure or resign immediately. As a close ally of Donald Trump and the leading figure of British souverainism, Farage is triumphant, while Starmer is fighting to save his leadership by refusing to “plunge the country into chaos.”
Reform UK Triumphs in Labour’s Traditional Strongholds: The Red Wall Shifts Once More
With more than 612 seats gained, Reform UK has emerged as the clear winner of these local elections, which cover over 5,000 seats across 163 councils and six mayoral races. Farage’s party made particularly striking gains in the former “Red Wall” constituencies of northern and central England — historic Labour heartlands that had already swung heavily to the Conservatives in 2019 on the back of Brexit. These post-industrial areas, long marked by economic decline, deindustrialization, and a deep sense of abandonment by London’s elites, are shifting again.
Farage successfully tapped into the profound discontent of working-class voters by promising a hard line on immigration, tax cuts, and the repeal of environmental policies seen as damaging to economic growth. This is no longer simply a protest vote: it signals that the Red Wall, once Labour’s bedrock, is detaching itself permanently from both traditional major parties. Reform UK has achieved spectacular breakthroughs in these regions, confirming that its souverainist, anti-establishment message resonates powerfully in areas that once delivered Labour its greatest victories.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives have also suffered heavy losses, with a net decline of around 300 seats. Labour’s collapse, with nearly 500 seats lost, far exceeds even the most pessimistic forecasts. The party is bleeding voters both to the right (Reform UK) and to the left (Greens and independents, especially in urban and university areas).
Labour MPs Demand Starmer’s Departure
Faced with this debacle, internal discontent has erupted. Labour MP Jon Trickett, representing northern England, was particularly blunt: “Many Labour voters I represent are angry, disappointed, and feel betrayed. They have sent us a clear message: the party and the leadership must change immediately if we are to recover.”
Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, has become the most senior figure to openly call for Starmer’s resignation. The Prime Minister has accepted responsibility for the losses but has refused to step down immediately, stating he does not want to “plunge the country into chaos.”
Farage, Trump Ally, Celebrates the “Political Revolution” and American Influence
Nigel Farage, a close ally and friend of Donald Trump, hailed the results as a major turning point. He has openly described Trump’s victory as an “inspiration” and has imported the American populist style into British politics. Reform UK explicitly invokes a “British Trumpism”: anti-elite rhetoric, strict immigration control, rejection of environmental policies seen as harmful to growth, and strong defense of national identity. This influence is also visible in the “Operation Raise the Colours” campaign, which encourages the widespread display of the St George’s Cross and Union Jack flags — a movement some media outlets have compared to the MAGA wave in the United States.
Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, analyzes: “The era of two-party politics is definitively over with Reform UK’s stunning national success and the Green Party’s more localized wins. The two traditional parties of government, Labour and the Conservatives, have been routed nationally and in some cases have ceased to exist as a meaningful force in whole swathes of the country.”
The English Flag: New Symbol of the Cultural Battle
Alongside these electoral results, the “Operation Raise the Colours” campaign — encouraging Britons to fly the St George’s Cross and Union Jack — has sparked fierce debate. Some see it as a legitimate patriotic revival, others as a sign of extremism. The Guardian has warned it may provide “cover for far-right agendas,” while Conservative MPs such as Robert Jenrick defend the right to proudly display national colors. Councils like Tower Hamlets and Birmingham have even ordered the removal of English flags, further fueling the controversy.

A Political Earthquake That Could Topple Starmer
These UK local elections mark a historic turning point. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, as Donald Trump’s ally, has established itself as the country’s rising new force, while Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is in full existential crisis. Calls for the Prime Minister’s resignation are multiplying even within his own party.
With only six months until crucial national elections, Britain is experiencing a genuine political earthquake: the era of traditional two-party dominance appears definitively over.
Britons have clearly expressed their weariness with the policies of both major parties and their desire to embrace new ideas. The great British rebalancing is underway — and it may well cost Keir Starmer his job. The entire country will bear the consequences.
